3D Rainbow Strips

Keywords: decision making, snipping/scissor use, bilateral coordination, tactile stimulation, visual tracking

Materials: 5-6 colored construction papers in various colors, scissors, stapler, cotton balls

Directions: Cut approx 1 inch strip of each color all the way across the page (so you have 5 or 6 strips that are all about 9 inches or longer). Line the strips up and cut each a bit shorter than the one before it. Have clients help to arrange in the color order they would like. Encourage clients who are able to snip the strips shorter since snipping in an entry level scissor use skill. Now line up one side of all the colors one on top of the other and staple them together. Line up the other side and staple those together to make a rainbow arch. Ask clients to fluff out the cotton balls and staple or glue them to each end. You can tie a string to the top arch and hang them around the house.

This activity celebrates the beginning of springtime and the end of a storm. Having clients make decisions about colors and sequencing will help to involve them. Snipping paper encourages them to use practice basic scissor use and tolerate HOH assist. The cotton balls are giving them tactile stimulation and bilateral hand use at midline to spread out/flatten the cotton balls. The project provides much visual stimulation, especially when hung from above to encourage neck extension and visual tracking.
