Keywords: HOH assist, decision making, hand strengthening, fine motor exercises, hand eye coordination, tactile stimulation, visual stimulation
Materials: Paper plate, scissors, hole punch, blue yarn, optional beads
Directions: cut paper plate in half, cut out the rim of one half and tape it to the bottom to give the umbrella a handle (see attached picture). Have clients decorate the umbrella with different patterns (stripes, dots, zig zags). Assist clients with hole punching a few holes on the umbrella (as shown in the picture). Cut out a few strands of yarn and tie them to the holes to make it look like rain. Optionally you can tie some beads along the way to look like raindrops.
This activity celebrates “April Showers” that will bring May flowers. This encourages decision making for the patterns, HOH assist to decorate, and hand strengthening to use hole puncher. It also provides fine motor exercises to thread the yarn through the holes or tie on beads. The project provides visual stimulation and also tactile stimulation with the bumps along the paper plate.
