Keywords: decision making, bilateral coordination, midline orientation, reach, finger isolation, visual stimulation
Materials: paper printout of flowers attached, markers, scissors, tray with water
Directions: Have clients color in the flowers, scribbling, encouraging different designs and colors. Assist them with cutting it out. Fold the petals inward on the colored side until it makes a “circle”. Fill a tray with water (about an inch deep), put the paper flower into the water with the folded side up and watch the flowers bloom.
This science and art activity provides clients with the chance to make decisions about what colors to use, encourage working with both hands at midline, encourages elbow extension through reaching and coloring. It also provides FM skills such as folding/creasing paper, and cutting out the patterns if possible. Finally, it provides visual stimulation to see the flowers unfold in the water and can teach about capillary action, which is the process of water being absorbed into the paper fibers or also the process by which plants grow as they draw water in from their roots.
