Materials: cheerios, pipe cleaners, yarn or twine to hang it on a branch
Directions: Make a loop on one end of the pipe cleaner, twist it to secure the loop in place. Have clients string on the Cheerios (leave some room at the end of the pipe cleaner to make another loop or “knot” to keep them from falling off. Now you can bend or twist the pipe cleaners into a shape (hearts or spirals for example). Now tie a yarn or twine through the loop you made and hang it outside on a branch for birds to enjoy.
This is a simple fine motor activity that works on threading skills. It incorporates bilateral coordination and working at midline to bring the pipe cleaner to view and to pincer grasp on the cheerios to successfully thread them through. It involves them making a decision about the type of feeder they want to make and where to hang it outdoors. If birds come by for eating, it adds visual tracking and stimulation to watch them enjoy the creation.
