Keywords: scoop and pour, pincer grasp, voluntary release, HOH assist, bilateral coordination, tactile stimulation
Materials:
Cleaning - old coins, plastic container (like a square Tupperware), white vinegar, salt, paper towel; Rubbing - crayon unwrapped, clean coin, paper
Directions: Combine 1 cup of vinegar with 1 tablespoon of salt in the Tupperware and stir until salt is dissolved. Add dirty coins into the dish and make sure it is one single layer without coins overlapping and fully submerged. Wait 15 min, take out the coins and dry them off. If not shiny enough, return them to the vinegar mix for another 5 minutes to clean.
Take the clean coins and place them under a white printer paper. Use the side of the crayons to rub over the print to create rubbings of coins (both front and back side).
This activity uses practical means to show clients the images of Presidents faces/silhouettes. It allows for scooping and pouring, pincer grasp and voluntary release of coins into cleaning solution. The crayon rubbings encourage HOH assist, bilateral coordination to stabilize the paper and coin underneath, and tactile stimulation through the bumpiness of the coins.
