DIY Confetti popper

Keywords: decision making, hand strengthening, bilateral coordination, visual stimulation, grasp and release

Materials: Toilet paper tube, balloons, scissors, tape, cut up some paper scraps for confetti, markers or stickers for decoration

Directions: Encourage clients to decorate the toilet paper tube through coloring and applying stickers. Tie up the balloon (no need to blow it up), and cut off the head. Place the tube into the open end of the balloon and tape it together. Fill the tube with scraps of colored paper. Holding onto the tube, pull down on the knotted part of the balloon and let go, “popping” the confetti out.

This activity encourages creativity and decision making to decorate the tube and select balloon color. If using pieces of tissue paper or paper scraps for confetti, encouraging clients to rip paper or snip paper into small pieces will increase hand strength and bilateral coordination. The confetti “popping” creates visual stimulation and also encourages active grasp and release to pull down on the balloon and let it go.
