ENCORE Day Program

Fork Painted Sunflowers

Keywords: HOH assist, reach and grasp, bilateral coordination, visual stimulation

Materials: plastic fork, paint (yellow, brown/orange, green), paintbrush, paper

Directions: Using the fork, dip the sharp end into yellow paint and drag it on the paper to create long and thin strokes to form a large ring. Leave the center blank for now. After completing the ring, use only the points of the fork and dip it into brown paint to create the center portion of the sunflower. Now, use the handle to dip into green paint and paint on the thick stems.

This activity allows clients to see the different ways that a utensil can be repurposed for art. They see how using the pointed ends will give tiny dots, dragging the sharp ends will provide thin lines. This also given them a chance to tolerate HOH assist, reach and grasp, work on a project using bilateral coordination, and provides visual stimulation. Hopefully the sunflower can bring cheer and brightness to their rooms as well to think of sunnier days ahead.
