The Benefits of Gardening
There are many health benefits to gardening. It can provide a great outlet for exercise, maintaining flexibility and strength, and relieving stress. It's a simple, adaptable activity that can be scaled according to your resources and interest. For caregivers of people with developmental disabilities it also provides an opportunity for meaningful engagement and communication. Build a small potted herb garden like the one pictured above, fill a larger raised garden bed so that people using wheelchairs can participate and enjoy it, or fill a large flower bed. Herbs can even be grown in a small hydroponic garden on a kitchen countertop or table.
Aside from the size of the garden, there are many types of gardens. You may want to start a herb garden, or plant seedlings. Maybe you would like to grow vegetables, or fill your backyard with flowers. Express some creativity, get some exercise, get people involved, and enjoy the time spent together.
