Lincoln Log House

Keywords: reach and grasp, crossing midline, bilateral coordination, tactile stimulation, visual stimulation

Materials: Popsicle sticks, construction paper, marker, glue

Directions: Take out 10 popsicle sticks and write down things about this country the clients can be grateful for - land of freedom, individual rights, right to vote/democracy, American dream, financial aid, public transportation, etc. Cut out colored construction paper into a house shape (triangle on top half, see picture). Glue down popsicle sticks on one side to make it look like a log cabin. Add a rectangle door with another colored paper, draw in windows and doorknob.

This activity allows clients to pause and reflect on President’s Day, some things that leaders of past generations and ages have instilled in this country. Popsicle sticks provide a great opportunity for reach and active grasp, you can present it from varying sides to encourage crossing midline or reaching forward and overhead. Applying glue and placing the sticks on the paper require bilateral coordination. Running their fingers over the popsicle sticks provides tactile stimulation and overall visual stimulation.
