Marble Painted Hawaiian Prints

Keywords: sensory/tactile, finger isolation, hand strength, visual stimulation, bilateral coordination

Materials: print out the attached sketches (card stock would hold up even better than regular printer paper), shaving cream, food coloring or tempera paint, fork to swirl the colors, flat pan or cookie sheet, ruler

Directions: Squirt out a thin layer of foamy shaving cream into the shallow pan, drop dots of food coloring or tempera paint onto the shaving cream. Using the fork or any other object, swirl the paints to give it a marbled look. Place the print out picture side down into the mixture to “paint” it. Pull it out of the mixture and use a ruler to scrape off the shaving cream right away. Let it dry and it should result in a colorful and joyful picture.

This activity provides many fine motor opportunities as well as sensory exploration. It allows clients to isolate finger and use hand strength to squeeze out the shaving cream. Encourage decision making when choosing colors to use. Then it is visually mesmerizing to watch the colors drop and swirl in the pan. Finally, placing the paper and removing the foam allows clients to explore the texture of shaving cream. Using the ruler to scrape off the foam requires bilateral coordination and tolerating HOH assist to do so. The result should be visually stimulating and unique.
