One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish Craft

Keywords: oral motor strength, visual stimulation, bilateral hand use, midline orientation

Materials: paper cupcake liners (can be solid colors or white), construction paper in blue, green, red, and yellow, markers, scissors, googly eyes (optional)

Directions: Have clients flatten the cupcake liner to make a circle, either use markers or paint to color one yellow fish, two green fish, one red and one blue fish. Cut out triangles from the colored construction paper to match and glue on the tails. Glue the fish onto blue construction paper as an ocean and add details such as googly eyes and smiles, as well as bubbles and seaweed with markers.

This activity provides some tactile stimulation through the bumpiness of the ridge of the cupcake liner. It also provides tactile feedback if clients need to paint or color over the white cupcake liners. It encourages opening and closing their palms to press down on the cupcake liner, provides color recognition and counting. It shows building a picture through the use of basic shapes (circle and triangle). When gluing and cutting, clients will tolerate HOH assist to work at midline with bilateral hands.
