Paper Leis

Keywords: decision making, HOH assist, crossing midline, hand strengthening, hand eye coordination

Materials: paper flower template (attached) either printed on colored paper or colored in after printing, hole puncher, yarn, drinking straws cut into 1 inch segments

Directions: Decorate the flowers and leaves print out in various colors. Cut out the shapes and hole punch them in the center where the circles are. Cut plastic straws into 1 inch segments. Cut out a piece of yarn about 2 feet long and tie a knot on one end and place some tape on the other end to give it a firm structure. Start stringing the flower, then leafy and straw segment on repeat until you run out of space. Tie up the ends together to create your own paper lei.

This activity is a nice celebration of Lei Day, which occurred on the first of May. It is a celebration of the aloha spirit, or good feelings towards each other. Making these paper leis allows clients to bring personalization to their color choices, tolerate HOH assist to color, crossing midline. Once cut out, using a hole puncher works on hand strengthening and threading the paper flowers and straw requires fine motor/hand eye coordination.
