Patriotic Streamers

Keywords: bilateral coordination, visual stimulation, tactile stimulation, neck extension

Materials: toilet paper tube, blue and white paint, paintbrush, red and white streamers about 12 inches long, glue, optional string to hang it up

Directions: have clients paint the toilet paper tube blue, add little white stars of paint or dots to represent stars. Cut off strips of streamers in red and white and glue or tape them to one end of the toilet paper tube. Optionally, you can cut the streamers in half again to make thinner strips. Tape string to the other end to hang it up.

The streamer activity celebrates Memorial Day by decorating the house with patriotic themes. Painting the TP tube encourages bilateral hand coordination (to grasp onto the tube with one hand and paint with the other hand), and provides vibrant colors for visual stimulation. Cutting and glueing the streamers gives tactile input due to the creased and bumpy nature of the streamers. When hung around the house, it provides visual stimulation and encourages neck extension to look upwards.
