Penguin Handprint

Materials: black construction paper, white paper, colored construction paper, glue, (optional: pom poms, white crayon, googly eyes, hole puncher to make snow)

Directions: Trace client’s hands onto black construction paper, if they tolerate it, use HOH assist so they can trace their own hand. Cut it out and glue it onto colored construction paper. Cut out a white circle for the belly as well as small circles for the eye if you don’t have googly eyes, glue those down as well. Decorate the winter scene in the back with white crayon or pom poms or hole punch some white paper as snow.

This winter activity allows clients to bring hands to midline and encourages opening of palms (finger extension) to trace their hand. It encourages bilateral coordination to keep one hand down and trace with the other hand, also tactile stimulation to their palms through the touch of the pen going around their hands. It provides high contrast color scene for visual stimulation, hand strengthening if using hold puncher to make dots, HOH assist to cut and glue items.
