Pom Pom Snowy Owls

Keywords: visual stimulation, color contrast, wrist flexion/extension, active grasp, HOH assist

Materials: black construction paper, brown paper, colored construction paper for eyes and feet, white paint, cotton balls, scissors, glue

Directions: Have clients grasp onto cotton ball with pincer grasp, if this is difficult, can tape it on the end of a utensil or clip it on the end of a clothespin to create a handle. Dip it into white paint and dab dab dab onto black construction paper to create a small round head and larger round body. Cut out brown construction paper to create a branch under the body, circles for eyes, triangle for the beak, green leaves to decorate the branch.

This activity incorporates using household items to create texture in a painting. It is white on black, which provides high color contrast and visual stimulation for our clients. The dabbing motion with cotton balls encourages small movements in the wrist (flexion/extension) and active grasp or HOH assist to do so.
