Rainbow Rice Shaker

Keywords: tactile stimulation, auditory stimulation, scoop and pour, HOH assist, fine motor

Materials: empty toilet paper tube or paper towel tube, rice or beans, foil, tape, paper and art supplies.

Directions: Cover one end of the tube with foil and tape it down, pour a small handful of rice or beans into it, cover the other end with foil and tape it down. Have clients decorate the paper with spring themed decor such as rainbows or clovers, clouds and rain. Encourage using both hands at midline. Wrap the paper around the tube and tape it down.

This activity provides clients with various household objects to repurpose. Allowing them to crumple foil around the base of the tube provides tactile and auditory stimulation. Pouring the rice or beans in gives an opportunity for scooping and pouring ingredients, decorating encourages creativity, tolerance of HOH assist, and building fine motor skills. The end result encourages active grasp and active movements in UEs, providing auditory feedback.
