Rainbow Sponge Painting

Keywords: visual stimulation, decision making, hand strengthening, HOH assist, crossing midline, elbow extension

Materials: sponge, paints you can squeeze out of a tube or bottle, paper

Directions: Have clients select the colors they want to use to make a rainbow and decide which order to present them. Using HOH assist, help them to squeeze one dollop of each color next to each other on the sponge. Guide their arm across the page to create a striped rainbow painting.

This activity incorporates visual stimulation and decision making to select colors. It helps with hand strengthening to squeeze paint out of tubes/bottles as well as tolerating HOH assist to do so. It encourages active reach and grasp to hold the paint and the sponge, and to cross midline using elbow extension while guiding the sponge across the page.
