Red paper poppies

Keywords: bilateral coordination, midline orientation, grasp, HOH assist, auditory feedback, pincer grasp, elbow extension

Materials: red construction paper, black marker, scissors, glue, paper for background

Directions: cut out long strips of red paper, have clients tear the strips into smaller pieces and glue them into a circle. Using a black marker, have the clients add a few dots to the center of the flower.

The poppy is in honor of Memorial Day, as it is a symbol of remembrance as well as a hopeful outlook towards a peaceful future. Tearing paper helps clients work on bilateral coordination, as well as bringing their arms to midline. They also work on grasp, tolerating HOH assist, and receive auditory feedback through the tearing sounds. It encourages elbow extension to place the scraps onto the glue and pincer grasp to hold onto the small scraps of paper.
