Simple Icicles

Keywords: hand strengthening, coordination, HOH assist, grasp, crossing midline, elbow flexion/extension, visual stimulation, tactile stimulation

Materials: dark construction paper, glue (from a bottle, not a glue stick), glitter, tray (optional to contain the mess)

Directions: At the top of the paper, have clients squeeze a horizontal line of glue all the way across, make one more horizontal line of glue in the middle of the paper. Now, hold the paper upright/tilt it so that the glue starts to drip down to form “icicles”. After you’re satisfied with the amount of icicles you have, sprinkle it with glitter and let it dry.

This activity is simple and great to improve hand strengthening and coordination. For those clients who are able to do so more independently, you can draw horizontal lines on the paper for them to “trace” with the glue bottle. Otherwise, provide HOH assist to grasp and squeeze the bottle while moving across the page (crossing midline). Shaking the glitter encourages active grasp and elbow flexion/extension, while the project provides visual and tactile stimulation.
