Materials: Thick white paper (card stock), acrylic paint, squeegee, scissors, optional: paintbrush, salt, and water
Directions: Over a wipe-able surface (you may want to layout some newspapers or sit the card stock on a cookie sheet), have clients select a paint color and squeeze a dollop of paint on the left side of the paper. Continue selecting 2-3 more colors and repeat the same. Now take the squeegee and run it through the paint from left to right a few times to create an ombre effect where the colors blend together. Set it aside to dry and cut out shapes afterwards.
In the meantime, on another sheet of card stock, dilute acrylic paint with some water and “watercolor” a background, sprinkle with salt and set aside to dry. When both projects have dried, cut out shapes such as trees or balls or snowflakes from the ombre paper and glue it onto the one with the salt. They can view the textured difference that adding salt creates.
This activity is unique in using a squeegee to create art. It encourages hand strengthening through squeezing paint bottles, decision making through selecting colors, and crossing mid-line by bringing the squeegee from one side to the other. The salt will provide a textured look and feel to bring visual and tactile stimulation.
