Materials: Large brown paper bag, 2 small brown paper bags, white tissue paper, stapler, glue gun, scrap paper and colored construction paper
Directions: Carefully turn the large bag inside out (if there is a lot of writing on the outside), fold the top down toward the inside of the bag. Make the fold about 4 inches long. Take the two front edges of the bag, and fold them in like you’re wrapping a present. Staple those two folds down.
Take your scrap pieces of paper and wad them up, stuff the bottom of the 2 small brown bags. Place the ends of the white tissue paper down into the bags with only the end peeking out about 1-2 in. (See attached image)
Twist the top of the bags around and glue or staple to secure. Glue the turkey legs onto the big turkey bag on both sides.
Crumble up some colored construction paper to represent the “stuffing” items and have the clients take turns tossing or dropping the items into the turkey.
This activity is Thanksgiving themed and might be fun for staff and clients to participate in together on Thanksgiving. It encourages hand strength to grasp and crumple paper, as well as reach to stuff them into the paper bag. It encourages HOH assist to assemble the turkey initially and if they need HOH assist to toss. Can encourage voluntary release to drop the stuffing into the turkey by placing the turkey next to them on the ground, as well as crossing midline and trunk rotation if you place the turkey on the opposite side of the hand they are using to grasp the object.
