Occupational Therapy - Thankful Turkey

Materials: Various colored construction paper, markers, glue

Directions: Cut out a brown peanut shape from brown paper to be the body, add eyes, mouth, and legs. Cut out variety of feathers from colored paper (feather outline attached if needed). Each client can add one feather a day about something they are grateful for, and by Thanksgiving, the turkey will be full of gratefulness.

This activity is a nice way to bring the clients together to work on a larger project that is meaningful. It is visually appealing and provides a visual reminder of gratefulness during this season. If possible, clients can help to trace the feather template onto colored paper (HOH assist and reach and grasp), encourages decision making to pick out the color of their feathers, and encourages communication to identify things they are grateful for.

Woven Placemat

Materials: Colored foam (from craft stores), scissors

Directions: Select a few colors and cut the foam into strips widthwise (shorter side of the paper). Select a base color and fold the foam in half widthwise and cut strips but leave about an inch before you reach the end. Weave in the strips over under over under and alternate with the next strip until you fill it in. This can be used for Thanksgiving dinner.

These placemats are a functional finished product. They are high contrast in color and will provide visual stimulation for our low vision residents. It encourages decision making to select colors and if possible, HOH assist to cut strips. It encourages use of bilateral hands to hold the base down while weaving strips in and out. It helps to create patterns (over, under, over, under) and to be able to see the

finished result of a pattern.
