Keywords: oral motor strength, visual stimulation, bilateral hand use, midline orientation
Materials: Print out attached PDF, construction paper, scissors, glue, straw, paint, water, markers
Directions: cut out the shapes from the attachment, have clients apply glue and arrange it on a piece of construction paper to look like the attached image. Squeeze some blue paint into a cup or bowl and mix a little bit of water just so it is runny. Drop some paint onto the hair portion of the craft and have clients blow through the straw to spread the paint around for crazy hair. If it is unsafe to blow with their mouths, have them place it somewhere in front of a fan or use the hairdryer and allow the fans to blow the paint around.
This activity is a fun way to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday by recreating Thing 1 and Thing 2. It encourages building oral motor strength through straw blowing, or if it is unsanitary to do so, will show cause and effect through wind blowing the paint on the page, giving visual stimulation. The cutting and pasting will encourage bilateral hand use and working with the project at midline orientation.
