Watercolor Beanie

Keywords: visual stimulation, grasp, reach, crossing midline, decision making

Materials: Watercolor paper or card stock, scissors, white crayon or oil pastel, water colors and paintbrush, template attached, optional: pompoms, paper towels and glue

Directions: Print out the template on the heavy card stock, or print it on regular printer paper and trace it onto the card stock or watercolor paper. Allow clients to use the white crayon/oil pastel to create patterns on the hat. You can encourage zigzags, dots, anything that gets their arms moving across the paper. Then, have them paint with watercolors and watch the designs reveal. For a textured look, place a paper towel on top of the finished hat and press down and remove the paper towel. Let the project dry. Cut it out and add pompom to the top of the hat if desired.

This activity is festive and visually stimulating as the patterns reveal themselves when paint is applied. Please encourage grasp onto crayons and paintbrushes as well as reaching and crossing midline to color and paint. Allow clients to select color combinations and use both hands at midline to blot the paper towel.
