Watermelon Fan

Keywords: reach and grasp, elbow extension/flexion, visual stimulation, wrist rotation

Materials: paper plate cut in half, markers or construction paper, craft stick (wooden tongue depressor), tape

Directions: Cut the paper plate in half so it looks like a large watermelon slice. Have the clients color the main part of it red, or cover it with construction paper. Color the rind portion green, or cover with construction paper. Using the black marker, encourage clients to dot around the red for seeds. Glue or tape the craft stick/tongue depressor to the rounded part of the paper plate and use it as a fan.

This activity celebrates the warmer weather by providing a completed fan to use. It encourages active reach and grasp with UEs to color in the fan, and elbow extension/flexion to dot with black marker. It provides visual stimulation with the colors and while waving the fan around. It encourages active wrist rotation and grasp to fan themselves and gives an opportunity for cause and effect.
