Writing Letters to Friends and Family
Writing letters has numerous benefits, not the least of which is staying in touch with friends and loved ones. Whether you put a pen to paper or write an email, here are just a few reasons to write a letter.
Assisting someone with writing a letter is an opportunity to connect with them and to have a conversation about what they care about.
Writing a letter stimulates creativity and encourages exploration. If the letter is handwritten, experiment with doodles or stickers, unusual stationary, or use scented pens and decorate the envelope to really unleash some creativity. If you are sending an email, attach photos or artwork, or a fun meme or GIF.
Writing promotes mindfulness: just like coloring or drawing, writing creates calmness and relieves anxiety. Handwriting a letter requires slowing down and taking care in the process, and putting thought into what you write. The rhythmic movement of pen-on-paper can encourage clarity and peace.
Writing generates self-reflection: because you are carefully considering what you are writing about, your mind is able to focus on the content. This means you are given time to think about your relationships, hobbies, or whatever else you are thinking about.
A letter can be about anything some cares about or wants to reflect on, but here are a few prompts for inspiration.
